This was fun and informative in so many ways, however everyone was a bit confused because it wasn't as big of a blast from the past as we had expected. For example, at the Dairy Farm, they milk cows by machines, just like others would at a Dairy Farm, but they use Diesel Power for stuff like that. They still use horses for the farming, but use tractors around the farm for some other things. Also, at the Wood Works Shop- same thing, and they had running water in their houses, and Diesel Powered stoves and likewise their fridge was Diesel Powered. Apparently, each Amish community decides what technology they will allow, based on several factors- one being the amount of time a technology would take them away from family or visiting friends. Some have phones, but never in their house, instead they are in the barn or shed, and are only used for extenuating circumstances. So they wouldn't just call up a friend on the phone. Instead they would ride in their horse drawn buggy to the friends house. This creates a more purposeful visit and they are likely to visit longer, as it takes much more effort- both planning effort and time. The Amish people were so sweet and kind. They are such hard workers and dedicated to honoring God in the way they feel is best.
We toured a Dairy Farm with Paul, an Amish home with Mary Anne, a Wood Works Furniture Factory and had a DELISH in home lunch by a sweet Amish lady named Caroline we also toured the museum and "gardens" around the tour center office.
My favorite pictures of the day...
